Nestled between the much larger states of Maharashtra and Karnataka along India’s western coastline, Goa is a pocket-sized paradise.
Facing the Arabian Sea, it has long been a popular destination for those seeking sun, sea, and sand, combined with a fabled nightlife scene. Not to forget the healthy dose of spirituality entrenched in everyday life across the entire subcontinent.
The lush, green interior of India’s smallest state is equally stunning. Defined by low, forested plateaus that merge with the wooded slopes of the Western Ghats, the area is dotted with hidden villages, temples and shrines. Although rarely removed more than 25 km east of the bustling coastal areas, Goa’s hilly hinterland is almost serene in comparison.
A Portuguese colony from 1510 until 1962, Goa has also been a melting pot of different cultures throughout the ages. Many locals have Portuguese names and surnames, and Christianity is the main religion alongside Hinduism. This kaleidoscopic blend of East and West, both visible and metaphysical, is quintessential to the state’s unique charm.
‘Susegad’
One concept that embodies the charms of Goan culture is susegad. Derived from the Portuguese word sossegado (quiet), the term is held synonymous with a laid-back attitude towards life that has prevailed over the centuries.
Described as the unhurried pursuit of happiness or a contented form of joie de vivre, it is befitting of a place known as “South Asia’s Latin Quarter” – with all its indulgences and caprices, deeply imbued with tropical lassitude.
On the other hand, the concept also carries negative connotations, such as indolence. Some have even uttered that it has always been an idyllic representation of the Orient in its role as the West’s pleasure periphery. A perpetuation of colonial discourse and the hegemonic exploitation of the Orient, that is to say.
Others dispel its existence altogether, claiming susegad has succumbed to the pressures of modern-day life.
Whatever the case may be, and there is undoubtedly some truth to all of the above, the concept continues to resonate with and inspire individuals from all walks of life.
Bar Culture
In contrast to most of other parts of India, bars have historically acted as important meeting points within Goan communities. To this day, even the smallest of villages are outfitted with a watering hole of some sorts where locals can come together and unwind.
Apart from boasting a rich wine culture, another legacy of Portuguese rule, a number of popular local alcoholic beverages are made in Goa.
For starters, you have cashew feni and coconut feni. The former is double distilled from the fermented juice of the cashew tree, the latter from the sap of toddy palm. Then there is urrak, which is prepared from a single distillation of the fermented juice of cashew fruit.
As far as beers go, Goa is home to the widely available Indian cult favourite King’s Premium Pilsner. There are also plenty of reasons for craft beer aficionados to get exited, as the following sections shall illustrate.

Craft Beer Venues in Goa
Goa Brewing Co.

The Goa Brewing Co. prides itself on being both socially and environmentally conscious, and rightfully so.
Besides being actively involved in sustainability initiatives centered on biodiversity in the Western Ghats and the reduction of plastic waste, the brewery is also on a mission to resurrect heirloom rice varieties. In order to do so, close relationships with local smallholders have been forged.
Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the brewery’s range of four beers is completely free of artificial ingredients. The fresh produce utilised is sourced whole and often directly from local growers.
Moreover, Goa Brewing Co. consistently purchases these products for 25% more than the legal minimum support price.
The brewery’s facilities and offices are located in an eighteenth-century property which is opened for tours on appointment. Favourites such as the People’s Lager – which pairs particularly well with Goan cuisine – and Eight Finger Eddie I.P.A. – a tribute to a famous hippie artist – can also be enjoyed in bars and restaurants all over Goa.
So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and find yourself one!

Named after a Konkani phrase meaning “gimme”, Maka Di has given craft beer lovers around Goa and beyond seven brews to rejoice over. Among them a Bavarian Keller, Belgian Tripel, Honey Ale, as well as the newly released Rocket Rice Lager.

Susegado

Next up, a name that no longer needs translating.
Operational since 2017, the Susegado brewery was co-founded by Aditya Challa. The brain and brawn behind Jungle Beer, Singapore’s first microbrewery, Mr. Challa is an experienced brewer with a professional background outside of the beer game who has resided in various countries. His first venture into the wondrous- yet often testing – world of brewing, Jungle Beer won hearts as well as awards all over South East Asia between 2011 and 2014.
While Susegado has yet to attain similar levels of exposure on a regional scale, the brewery is already a household name on home turf. Balancing a strong global outlook with a deep appreciation for Goa, its range of six brews is available at a host of bars and bottle shops in the state’s coastal areas. This includes the likes of an English Ale, a Vanilla Porter, and a Kokum Gose.
Note: At the time of writing, the Susegado brewpub in Calagunte was temporarily closed for renovations.
